Isa is a former war hero, teacher, violinist, and member of the resistance movement in Jakarta. He is married to Fatimah, who handles weapons as skillfully as she plays the piano. Together with Isa’s best friend Hazil, they plan a political assassination – but Hazil also falls for Fatimah. This City Is a Battlefield is both an intense character drama and a sweeping historical tale set during a time when the local population fought against oppression, based on Mochtar Lubis’ novel A Road with No End.
