Luxembourg by Ukraine director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy ready to go
The award-winning director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy has started shooting his second feature Luxembourg. The film is supported by Sørfond and is co-produced by the Norwegian production company DUOfilm.
We are happy to announce that Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy Luxembourg has started shooting. The film is co-produced by Norwegian DUOfilm and they were granted NOK 500 000 in support in 2015.
“It is very important for a Ukrainian project to build up a co-production with European countries, we are very pleased to have such support,” said Anna Katchko who will produce Luxembourg with Valentyn Vasyanovich of Studio Garmata Film to Screen Daily.
We met with Slaboshpytskiy and Katchko at this year Berlinale co-production marked and the project immediately caught our attention. During its development stage, Luxembourg was awarded the ARTE International Prize and Sundance Global Filmmaking Award for best script and it also blew the Norwegian production company DUOfilm away.
- “ We wanted to apply with this project because it is an important story to tell. We were already very exited about Slaboshpytskiy´s earlier work on “The Tribe”, where we thought he did an amazing job. Luxembourg has a strong storyline and a thematic, which we believe, can reach out to a broad audience and were instantly taken by the script and Myroslav´s storytelling technique.
We also find it exiting to work with three other countries: Ukraine, Germany and France. This project is also an unique chance for us to develop both the company and our selfs”, says Linda Bolstad, Marie Fuglestein Lægreid og Ingrid Lill Høgtun from DUOfilm.
In Luxembourg Myroslav tells a dramatic jealousy drama about a policeman who works as a watchman in the shuttered zone after the Chernobyl disaster - an area the size of the state of Luxembourg. The film is a stone cold drama, which further develops the director aesthetic film universe from his award winning film, The Tribe. At the press conference in Kiev producer Anna Katchko reviled that the neo-noir style film will be shot on location in the Chernobyl exclusion zone from Dec 2015 to Jan 2016. She also reviled to Screen Daily that:
- "The leading roles will be covered by professional Ukrainian actors, but all the second roles will be performed by the non-professional actors - the local people living and working in the Chernobyl exclusion zone: policemen, technicians, cleaners, construction workers."
Luxembourg is the second feature from Slaboshpytskiy . His debut feature The Tribe (Plemya) won 3 awards when it premiered at the Cannes film festival in 2014 and has won 24 awards in total. It was sold to over 40 countries – Norway included.
