RETABLO IN GENERATION 14PLUS AT THE BERLINALE
The Sørfond-supported film Retablo by Álvaro Delgado-Aparicio L. have been invited to the Generation 14plus competition of the 68th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.
The 68th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival is held 15th -25th February. Since 1978, the Berlinale has devoted a section to children and young people: Generation. In two competitions, Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus, discoveries from state of the art world-cinema are presented.
This year a total of 65 full-length and short films from 39 production and co-production countries have been invited to compete in the Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus competitions, among them – Retablo.
Retablo was supported by Sørfond in 2016, and is a co-production between Peru, Germany and Norway, with main producer Siri Producciones S.A.C. in Peru. The Norwegian co-producer Dag Hoel from Dag Hoel Filmproduksjon as is happy for the selection to the Berlinale:
“It is very satisfying, and not surprising that Retablo is chosen to participate in the Generation competition during the Berlinale. Alvaro Delgado’s directorial debut is a seductive film. It is shot in the Peruvian highlands among the natives. The film is a drama that portrays the picturesque sides of native culture, but also a darker side of the society like machismo and homophobia that are central themes in the story. I am convinced that Retablo will have a large audience throughout the world, but most probably the film can never be screened in the area in which it was shot because of its way of tackling these issues and trying to break down taboos,” Hoel explains.
About Retablo
14-year-old Segundo lives with his parents in a village high in the magnificent mountains of Peru. His father Noé is a respected artist and Segundo’s role model. Noé hand-crafts altarpieces, decorated shrines for church and home, and is teaching Segundo the necessary skills to carry on in his footsteps. But cracks have developed in their close relationship because Noé is keeping a dark secret. With brutal honesty and saturated colours, the film peeks behind the facade of a seemingly intact village community where homophobic attitudes enforced by patriarchal laws are carried out with remorseless violence. It sketches a visually powerful panorama of a world in which a young artist is searching for his niche.
The Berlinale
The Berlinale is a great cultural event and one of the most important dates for the international film industry. More than 334,000 sold tickets, more than 21,000 professional visitors from 127 countries, including more than 3,700 journalists.
The 68th Berlin International Film Festival is held from 15th to 25th February 2018.
